NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory has returned astounding new footage of fiery rings erupting from the sun.
The observatory was launched in February and is able to take ultra-high resolution images of the entire sun whereas previous probes were only able to take high resolution images of one small section of the sun at a time.
Fiery rings of ionised gas erupt from the sun in the first videos taken by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory. The satellite is delivering unprecedented views of the star, which could help untangle the mysteries of its magnetic field and improve forecasts of solar storms on Earth.
