Australian firm Skylifter is developing an airship that could carry huge loads hundreds of miles.
The technology could one day enable emergancy field hospitals and disaster relief units to be dropped in to remote areas, the project is currently aiming to have the airships transport over 150 tonnes 1,200 miles.
Giant balloons that can carry loads over long distances could one day even transport entire buildings. Australian firm Skylifter is developing a piloted airship that will carry up to 150 tonnes more than 1,200 miles. They hope that the vehicles could one day carry rural hospitals and disaster-relief centres to remote areas.

Interesting idea but with so many potential problems. Problems that could be overcome with proper engineering, of course, but not as simple as it might first seem. And YouTube would be inundated with new UFO videos...

Bit behind the times... Hybrid Air vehicles already have plans for a 1000 tonne airship lifter, and are contracted to the US DOD to build a 304ft airship this year http://www.hybridairvehicles.net/

10 feet wide and can carry one pound? 150 feet wide can carry how much? 500 feet wide can carry 150 ton Unless they have some kind of super gas I doubt anyone will see it carry that much unless it is the size of the moon.

Think "volume" This makes a huge difference when scaling-up. For example(assuming a spherical balloon): 3-ft diameter lifts .9 pounds 6-ft diameter lifts 7.1 pounds 12-ft diameter lifts 57 pounds 24-ft diameter lifts 455 pounds 100-ft diameter lifts 33,000 pounds !!!
