NASA has greenlit an ambitious Mars mission designed to study how the planet lost its atmosphere.
The half-million dollar "Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (Maven)" mission is scheduled for 2013 and will also help scientists to understand whether or not the planet was ever able to support life.
Nasa has given the green light to a $438 million (£275 million) mission to Mars aimed at investigating the mystery of how the 'red planet' lost its atmosphere.
