A woman in the US has a rare medical condition that results in her having no sense of fear whatsoever.
The part of her brain responsible for fear reactions has been literally destroyed by a rare condition, throughout her life she's gone through everything from being held at knifepoint to being nearly killed in a domestic violence incident without feeling any fear at all.
A woman who knows no fear because of damage to a key emotion centre in her brain is lucky to be alive, scientists said today. The US woman, known only as SM, lives in a poor and dangerous neighbourhood and has been the victim of numerous crimes.

Love is the essence of all and fear opposes love, so it makes you limit yourself; thus is an illusion. We are spiritual beings with infinite power, a projection of the one consciousness of the universe. Fear leads to devolution or destruction, instead of evolving. I think she has a gift... (and not having fear doesn't mean you don't have a gut feeling; that's our intuitive or psychic sight that everyone has, naturally)

(and not having fear doesn't mean you don't have a gut feeling; that's our intuitive or psychic sight that everyone has, naturally) First of all, welcome to UM! If everyone has it, I know quite a few people that ignore it or didn't learn how to listen to it.

Fear doesn’t oppose love, hatred does. The opposite of fear is confidence. But y... [More]

What rational thinking?? If she doesn't have a fear that when the snake will bite she can die, then how can you say that she can think rational? And also the fear is a natural extinct that can cause your body to react in a certain way such as releasing loads of adrenaline in order to get ready for the "fight or flight" situation. When the person can't feel the fear he/she will not be able to judge that what can cause harm to him/her. The kind of rational thinking you would learn years prior as a child. Learning isn't 100% emotional. Lets say her mother (when she's 10) tells her not touch a sna... [More]

i think i might have had this condition when i was a kid cause i was fearless then except for spiders that was the only thing i feared and that is because my mom and sisters feared them, and i wasn't even so much scared of them i just didn't like them showing up out of the blue and freaking me out, but yeah i've read that fear can be controlled and adrenaline can be shut off with your mind, i know theres a lot of sceptics but the have been people who meditate and can survive without food, can survive burried in a coffin for much longer then any ordinary person and can control their heart rate,... The kind of rational thinking you would learn years prior as a child. Learning isn't 100% emotional. Lets say her mother (when she's 10) tells her not touch a snake because its bite could kill her. A lack of fear shouldn't equate to an inability to comprehend or learn. You may act irrational in a situation where you might not have prior knowledge to make an adult choice. So I could see that. There's no reason a condition like this would result in an adult throwing out things they would have otherwise learned at adolescence. Yeah right but for instance if a snake jumps at her she would be proba... [More]

Yes, to me fear, like anger, causes people to make too many wrong decisions. Wars are basically caused by fear. It's a useless emotion. Was useful to our ancient ancestors, but not to us. That womans probably quite alone in this world surrounded by the rest of us. I say we should all head off to the surgeons and have the fear part of our brains chopped out.

She's known only as SM? Hmm. I think I'd avoid this woman. S&M gives me the heebie-jeebies. But.... SM could also stand for Supermum, I suppose.

Yeah right but for instance if a snake jumps at her she would be probably be very slow to react due to the lack of fear because she will not go into a state of consciousness that the snake can hit her and she can get hurt due to lack of fear. and the overall point is that some of her basic human instincts would me completely gone. I agree with this. I can understand abnormal reactions or lapse of judgment in what would otherwise be traumatic situations. I just don't believe its an excuse to void out all learned behavior.
