The remains of statues including those of a pharoah and an Egyptian baboon god have been unearthed.
The find was made during an excavation at Amenhotep's mortuary temple, the largest in ancient Egypt. The baboon statue is believed to be that of the god Hapi who was depicted as a baboon by the ancient Egyptians.
Archaeologists have discovered fragments of a statue of a pharaoh and an ancient god during a routine excavation at what was once the largest temple in ancient Egypt, culture minister Farouk Hosni said on Thursday.

It has to do with Tehuti (greek: Thoth). He was seen sometimes giveing a baboon headed god (dont think he was a god of the netjer) knowledge. I was going to say.... In the article the sculpture is said to depict the god Hapi, but wasn't Thoth sometimes depicted as a baboon too? Unless there were inions, how were they able to determine which one it depicted?

I think Hapi was depicted as a having a head of a baboon, he appeared as such on canopic jars. Baboons were Thoth's holy animal, and he sometimes would appear as a baboon as well. Also, got a kick out of this line: Although the blocks were reused in the construction of other temples, it is believed that the northern side of the temple served as a burial spot for broken.

Also, got a kick out of this line: Ive heard a few theories on the baboon head but from what i remeber they thought the god came from the lower outskirts of egypt. Ibis is the main animal of Tehuti. The only image ive seen of the baboon with relation to Tehuti was him getting something from Tehuti. Maybe theres more. I do know there were alot of gods that were swallowed by the egyptian gods we know from the greeks. T... [More]

Sorry, i know Egypt is in Africa, but when i think of Africans...I think of these guys Um... what the heck? I think that might violate some terms/conditions with the nudity. And the tumors. Jeeze. As for the second pic...you'd be well not to as the Ancient Egyptians weren't white. Seriously, those look more like Greeks. Except... conspicuously the fellows pulling the stones. Where'd you pull that pic from? Anyway... yeah.I know many people forget to associate Egypt with the restof Africa, so don't sweat it. Just please don't tell me you think Europeans were involved in the construction of the ... [More]

I just typed in African tribes, on google images. Sorry, I just noticed those huge tumors hanging from their lower regions. Lol, and yeah don't worry i know the skin colour on the egyptian pic isn't very accurate. My apologies. If a mod comes along, feel free to delete that first picture.

Truly facinating culture the ancient egyptians. No disrespect at all, but their world view - like many world views - must've been...crazy. All kinds of weird gods and demons, omens and curses all the time, megalomaniacs running 'round everywhere. Come to think of it, things havn't changed that much at all!

Unless there were inions, how were they able to determine which one it depicted? At first sight I also was thinking Thoth, but the article states Hapi. As ShadowSot mentioned, Hapi is most familiar to everyone as the canopic jar with the head of a baboon (example here and farthest left here). As ShadowSot also mentioned, Thoth could appear as either ibis or baboon, although the former is the most common manifestation. Hapi makes some sense, however. This stat... [More]
