A staggering eight million mummified dogs have been unearthed beneath the Egyptian desert.
The dogs were found packed in to a labyrinth of tunnels, some were laid to rest after they had died while others are thought to have been sacrificed to the gods when merely a few hours old. The catacombs were found about 12ft underground and consist of a long central corridor with numerous smaller passages that branch off from it.
A labyrinth of sacred tunnels packed with the mummified remains of millions of dogs has been excavated under the Egyptian desert. The catacombs are estimated to contain the remains up to eight million dogs, many of which would have been offered to the gods when they were just hours old.
