Doctor called to confirm headless man dead

At what point does calling in a doctor to determine that someone is dead border on the ridiculous ?
When police dragged a body from a river in London last June rules and regulations dictated that they call for a doctor to determine that the individual was actually dead even though he was missing a rather important part of his body... his head.
When police pulled a headless body from a river, you would not have thought it needed a doctor to confirm the person was dead. But there are rules and procedures to follow. And a medic was duly called in to declare that the man in question was actually ‘life extinct’.

What a horrible way to die, like that. But I suppose that they would have had to call in a ME or coroner to see the body.

It's now official; common sense has been pronounced dead.

Oh, that's classic, Tiggs!! So true that common sense isn't that common any more!

This reminds me somewhat of the story about an exchange in court between a coroner and a lawyer: * Lawyer: "Doctor, before you performed the autopsy, did you check for a pulse?" * Witness: "No." * Lawyer: "Did you check for blood pressure?" * Witness: "No." * Lawyer: "Did you check for breathing?" * Witness: "No." * Lawyer: "So, then it is possible that the patient was alive when you began the autopsy?" * Witness: "No." * Lawyer: "How can you be so sure, Doctor?" * Witness: "Because his brain was sitting on my desk in a jar." * Lawyer: "But could the patient have still been alive nevertheless?... Honestly, that's just comical at best.

If policy wasn't followed it would have lead to more of a waste of money in the courts I guess. Plus if it's a murder investigation can't f it up right.
