The brain really can be half asleep

Study shows that contrary to popular belief, the brain is never always awake nor always asleep.
Have you ever been unable to remember where you put your keys? Or perhaps you've driven somewhere "automatically" yet couldn't remember the actual drive. A study has shown that during these moments, parts of your brain containing that vital information has been "offline" or asleep.
The team at the University of Wisconsin, who measured electrical waves in the brain, discovered that some nerve cells in tired yet awake individuals can briefly go "offline".

I always assumed this was the case in situations like Sleep Paralysis, for example.

I remember I once encountered an odd problem at work and I need to solve it within the next day so I keep on thinking for the solution until I went home and get to sleep, when I woke up I have the answer. Is it because my brain is still calculating while I still fast asleep.

I kind of figured. It helped alot in high school, when I could sleep and learn at the same time.

Tell me something I don't know, I've got Chronic Fatigue Syndrome so I'm half asleep all the bloody time. I would be interested in having my electrical waves measured however, I wonder how I could go about arranging that? Have you ever been tested for Sleep Apnea or some other sleep disorder?

I remember I once encountered an odd problem at work and I need to solve it within the next day so I keep on thinking for the solution until I went home and get to sleep, when I woke up I have the answer. Is it because my brain is still calculating while I still fast asleep. Einstein used this modus operandi all the time, it works.
