Study explores ethics based on beliefs

The study found that there was no difference in ethical behaviour between believers and non-believers.
It did however find that those who saw God as a compassionate being were more likely to cheat than those who saw God as an angry, punitive figure. "The take-home message is not whether you believe in God, but what God you believe in," says psychologist Azim Shariff.
A new study on the link between one's view of God and willingness to cheat on a test is the latest example of social scientists wading into the highly charged field of religion and morality.

Meh, if you don't want to be cheated on, don't cheat. If you're still cheated on, then bail.

While I can't comment on the validity of the study based on size, demographic, etc., I can say that the results tend to mirror my own personal experience dealing with a fair amount of people who identify themselves as Christians. I word it that way because I don't see them as true Christians but, that's just my opinion of course. I'm referring to the ones who curse proficiently, have sex out of wedlock, cheat on their spouses, party, drink and do drugs during the week all the way up to Sunday. Then come Sunday, it's off to church to be "forgiven". These are also the same ones who will post rel... [More]

I found quite a few problems with this post. Let me know what you guys think. I am sure there are more. The article focuses a lot on what kind of God the students believed in: Angry or Loving. They don't say mention the number of believes/ non-believers that were taking the test and what amount of non-believers cheated. Therefore, the small blurb in the beginning of the article is a lie and doesn't have much to do with what they tested. The authors found that 95% of Americans believe in God, but conceive of that higher being in very different ways. If that was the ratio found in the students t... [More]

Pandora7321, it would seen that you're acquainted with the wrong "Christians". Are you referring to Catholics? The reason I ask is that you mentioned that they act out all week and then go to church on Sunday to be "forgiven". Main stream Christianity doesn't have the confessional. To sum it up, calling yourself a Christian doesn't make you one in the eyes of God. I think you kind of get that though. The way they use the terms "believers" and "nonbelievers" is what causes me to question the validity of the survey. Just saying you believe in God doesn't mean a whole lot. Anyone can believe anyt... I totally get the gist of what Padora7321 is saying - and I agree. Im not a Christian at all, but I respect what Jesus was trying to say. But it strikes me as odd that some people see God this way, yet others see him another way. Well which one is it? Can't be both. So to me, whether someone cheats or not, has really nothing to do with the actual nature of God him/her/itself. [or if you're an Athiest - nothing to do with God at all] To me, you cheated because you're a cheat. End of story.

I can forgive my ex for cheating, but she crossed the line. Once bitten, twice shy.

Yup SpiderCyde, cheatings low. She must've believed in a compassionate God.

Growing up I often had the argument with my mother regarding who will get into heaven. She of the fundamental leanings said only the people in the church she embraced would go to heaven. So, I would posit, there are two people, one from your church who behaves appropriately according to that particular teaching which portrays God as vengeful and promises to PUNISH them horribly if they do not abide by the Scripture. They behave because they fear eternal punishment. On the other hand, you have someone in some far flung piece of the planet who has never heard of the Christian God yet he never ra... [More]
