A skin patch that may cure thousands of their deadly peanut allergy has been developed by doctors.
Approximately 500,000 children and adults run the risk of exposure to peanuts and a potentially deadly reaction on a daily basis. Even the most minute exposure can lead to anaphylactic shock which triggers airway inflammation. Using a patch would allow the micro-doses to be absorbed into the skin and subjected immediately to the immune system and thereby avoiding direct exposure to bloodflow.
Researchers believe it presents one of the best possible ways of finding an effective treatment for a life threatening reaction to peanuts. Developed by two leading paediatricians the device releases minute doses of peanut oil under the skin. The aim is to educate the body so it doesnt over-react to peanut exposure.
