Tiny village is latest victim of mystery hum

A small village in England is the latest to become victim to a strange unexplained humming noise.
Residents have complained about a low humming sound at the very edge of perception and despite their best efforts no source for it can be found. The village is by no means the first to report such a thing, over the years thousands of people around the world have been disturbed by the constant and pervasive din known only as "the hum".
Residents of Woodland, in County Durham, claim that every night a noise permeates the air similar to the throb of a car engine. It is sometimes so strong that it even shakes the bed of one of the householders. But no matter how hard they look, the community cannot find the source of the problem and, at their wits end, have called in the council to investigate.

I've also heard of this maybe a year or so ago. I read in an article that one location was proven that the hum was being heard by only people that lived near the coastal area and that it was apparently such a high frequency that only some people could hear it. They said it was the soundwaves of energy being transferred from shallow waves to the Earth's crust. Oh, and this article mentions something I didn't remember reading and that is that the atmosphere might also be contributing. Read more here.

I remember hearing about the "Hum" several years ago. I always wondered if it was related to communications testing that was going on. I recall some experiments being done with Ultra Low Frequency as a means to transmit signals through the ground or to deep water submarines...don't recall ever hearing if it was successful or not. There was also some testing done a few years ago called SAWtech...i.e Surface Acoustic Wave technology... Maybe it's just some communication research that has a side effect of causing resonance in the stone strata or bedrock which some people can hear as a hum and oth... [More]

I remember reading a 50s pulp "it's not the chariots of the gods, we're actually talking sense. Honest" book where they put all the mysterious subterranean phenomena down to (well) dwarves/goblins/gnomes/nasty humanish chaps who live beneath the Earth and are basically sociopaths. They caused mines to collapse and laughed at the people dying, they kidnapped children and ate them that sort of thing. The "hum" was them digging beneath the surface.

It's infrasound. No doubt about it. Finding the source would prove valuable, as infrasonic disturbance can often be attributed to natural phenomena and indeed disasters. These poor parochial folk could be in for a lot more than that nagging hum.

I am wondering if there is some underground digging going on in these areas, around the world. Otherwise, what could it be?

We have a dull hum in the background here too most noticable when at night and theres no traffic. They drill and pump oil and gas where I live so I just put it down to low frequency vibrations coming from the ground.

I highly doubt that. Some people would have gone to the doctor, even by routine, and it would have been caught and traced pretty easily. Also, there a low chance of bacteria surviving and getting into many people at the same time. Water that comes from showers comes a main plumbing system, which means the water has been processed. Shower water especially also tends to have higher levels of chlorine, and also, ear infections, no matter what the disease, tend to have other effects as well (except for those which cause deafness, but we know it can't be that because everyone who heard the hum woul... If it were HAARP, would other countries agree to let the U.S. in to conduct their tests? Maybe other countries are conducting their own high frequency testing. Really odd though, it comes then goes with no clue as to what is causing it and no damage that we know of to the land, yet.

I am wondering if there is some underground digging going on in these areas, around the world. Otherwise, what could it be? Sound travels through denser materials, like earth and especially rock much easier, , .. And much much farther than it can through the air. I'm guessing "it" could be a lot of things. Also, People's hearing varies some.. I had a hearing test once upon a time, and was able to hear sounds well below "normal" range. The tester was astonished! We have a natural gas separator about a mile away... and i usually hear a low pitched humm .. or sort of Diesel idling sound , (becaus... [More]
