A former Japanese POW is believed to be Britain's oldest ballet dancer and shows no sign of stopping.
At 80 years of age, John Lowe bought a house and the first thing he did was install a wooden floor so he could roller skate. Not long after, he had a ballet bar installed. A homemade trapeze hangs from the ceiling, made from a section of the ballet bar and a pulley system. Eleven years later and he is taking ballet classes three days a week and practices at home in between.
Lowe is a former POW during WWII, having spent three years in a camp in Japan, and has experience managing theatres around England. He always dreamed of becoming a ballet dancer in his younger years.
John Lowe is flying through the air on a home-made trapeze at his bungalow. His stockinged legs are straight out behind him, his lips clamped in concentration. As he lands, he grins from ear to ear, a naughty, impish grin, as if having an audience is just the thing he thrives on.
