Everyone's heard of a fear of heights or spiders, but what are some of the lesser known phobias ?
Some of the things that people suffer from an irrational fear of in everyday life boggles the mind. Papaphobia for instance is a fear of the Pope while aulophobics are unlikely to play any instruments with an irrational fear of flutes. Then there's geliophobia - a fear of laughing, along with metrophobia - a fear of poems.
While there's a fine line between fears and phobias, there seems to technical distinctions for almost every type of fear. In fact, there's even a term for people who are afraid of being afraid. It's called Phobophobia.

my daughter has a fear of being watched by a duck. it has a name but I cannot remember it. That's very interesting Daavin. I hadn't heard of this phobia at all until I read this thread and looked up a list and meanings.

When I was younger I was scared of both sheep and lettuce. It's funny because now I love sheep and lettuce is delicious. This doesn't count as a phobia, but if a pickle is anywhere near me I'll move, or if one touches me I'll have to wash my hands. It's weird, but they are just so gross... CC

Oh I don't know, the fear of gravity kinda creeps up on you as you get older Seriously though, I'm afraid of heights, which is seriously annoying because I love mountains and the panoramic views but can't get close enough to the edge to make the most of them. I don't get it either, makes no sense, it is so physical and nauseous but I really, really want to enjoy the heights at the same time - strange freaking battle going on in my sub-conscious somewhere

I was afraid of heights until aged 16 when I started my apprenticeship in a shipyard where I conquered it quickly, mainly to avoid embarressment. lol I never stayed in the yards long and about 10yrs later noticed that, "Hey Presto!".... am afraid of heights again. How does that work? Exactly, I used insist on doing stocktakes in those cages they put on forklifts up to 5 levels high just so I could keep my sanity and fear of heights at bay, it got easier and I enjoyed it but hey presto, no more stocktakes and I am a quivering mess again.

I never really had any phobias until I got caught in a very nasty lightning storm. I used like them, but now thunder and lightning just terrify me. I don't know if it's an actual phobia or just a healthy fear, but since I was 21, I can't stand them.

When I was younger I had a phobia for swallowing food. I was alright with liquids. It stemmed from choking on a small bit of sausage. It was weird, my throat reflexes just did not want to cooperate because I was thinking about it too much. I got over it somehow. I usually eat too fast lol

I am afraid of roots that grow where they are not supposed to like out of the pot thru a hole, I am astounded where roots can actually get to. The fleshier they are the worst they are, roots look weak but they are incredibibly strong. I also don't like plants growing in weird places like up walls or inside houses from underneath (sneaky), I especially don't like it when tiny growing things search out gaps to grow thru into new teritory. If I touch fleshy roots accidently like when I am repotting my hands go all crawly and I have to leave it and go back to it later. I really don't like roots an... [More]
