Chief longevity scientist Aubrey de Grey predicts that a cure to aging may be very close indeed.
De Grey believes that the first person to live to 150 is most likely alive today and that the first person to reach 1,000 years old is likely to be less than 20 years younger. "I'd say we have a 50/50 chance of bringing aging under what I'd call a decisive level of medical control within the next 25 years or so," he says.
De Grey sees a time when people will go to their doctors for regular "maintenance," which by then will include gene therapies, stem cell therapies, immune stimulation and a range of other advanced medical techniques to keep them in good shape.

It definately seems that boosting mitochondria has something to do with living longer ... http://inhumanexperiment.blogspot.com/2009/03/intermittent-fasting-reduces.html ConclusionIntermittent fasting without a reduction in body weight or total energy intake completely inhibited the development of a specific cancer (lymphoma) in female mice considered to be a model of accelerated aging. After four months, a third of the mice in control group had died, while all of the alternate-day fed mice were still alive and healthy. This inhibitive effect was associated with lower reactive oxygen species (... [More]

Fact is a lot of old people are quite happy to die ! When you are worn out, not necessarily afflicted with debilitating illness, but "everything" has degraded to the point where life just doesn't seem to be worth the bother, the sting of death just hasn't the same dread as it does for a functionally vital younger person. As it stands today, people are being kept alive by drugs when well and truly "sans everything" as Shakespeare put it. The idea of people living to 150 or 200 is not as attractive as it sounds.

- If Aubrey de Grey's predictions are right, the first person who will live to see their 150th birthday has already been born. And the first person to live for 1,000 years could be less than 20 years younger. http://www.reuters.c...E7632ID20110704 Hi, I have read somewhere that even if one could live forever the average life span for humans on Earth would be about 600. Why 600? Because that is the statistic when, on average, a human would be killed by an accident or something similar. Just because one can live forever does not mean that one will, for we are all but mere mortals and made of fle... [More]

Hi, I have read somewhere that even if one could live forever the average life span for humans on Earth would be about 600. Why 600? Because that is the statistic when, on average, a human would be killed by an accident or something similar. Just because one can live forever does not mean that one will, for we are all but mere mortals and made of flesh and blood which are very susceptible to all kinds of trauma. I predict that there will be a pill for cancer within 20 years. This pill will delete DNA copying errors/mutations and hence remove the threat of the disease/condition. The big problem... [More]

The things that "go wrong" just pile up into a log-jam as people get into their eighties ( assuming they get that far) sprightly 90-year-olds are a very rare commodity. Nature seems to have installed "planned obsolescence" into our genes, and like an old car, we eventually reach a point of being "uneconomic" to keep running. The idea that all these limitations can be eliminated is fanciful, IMO, virtually the whole organism becomes degraded, joints wear out, kidneys lose their functional ability, hearing is shot, eyes fail, skin thins to the point of fragility, sexual function becomes a fading... This sounds like a terrible idea to me. 7 billion people on the planet, and now we want to stop them all from dying. And if not all, then only the mega rich get to live for huge terms. Sounds like either this will never happen, or if it does it means human kind will truley act as a virus and destroy the world with its greed. Maddox...no offense intended but the avatar is disturbing... it's...damn... But I agree completely with your point. It would be like that mini series TORCHWOOD MIRACLE DAY Where everyone stopped dying on the same day and life got HUGELY complicated suddenly.
