Scientists are demanding new rules to prevent experiments to give lab animals human-like attributes.
The move is aimed at avoiding future experimentation such as injecting human stem cells in to apes to give them human-like memories or even the ability to speak. "These possibilities that are at the moment largely explored in fiction, we need to start thinking about now," says Professor Thomas Baldwin.
It sounds like something from a Hollywood science fiction film: a race that is half human, half ape. But leading scientists are today demanding tough new rules to prevent the nightmare scenario becoming a reality.
