People soon to be on loan at 'human library'

A new library is being devised in which people can be "checked out" to discuss their own experiences.
The idea behind it is to give people the chance to pick the brains of those with certain disabilities or experiences rather than simply reading about it in a book. "What we're aiming to do is bring the library to life for people. There are huge repositories of experience and knowledge in their own brains," said deputy chief librarian Melanie Houlden.
The $36-million Surrey City Centre library, set to open at the end of the month, will allow users to "check out" people and pick their brains about their experiences with blindness, immigration, religion or a disability, among other things. The goal is to break down stereotypes and start discussions, said deputy chief librarian Melanie Houlden.

This is awesome, it's like having a parent to tell you all about real life, except when you're tired you can put them back on the shelf.

Welcome to the forums! Got any words of advice for us, old timer? Will have to be something other than, "You don't tug on Superman's cape. You don't spit into the wind. You don't pull the mask off the old Lone Ranger." Darn, you picked off all the goodies already. Seriously, I think a boss I had some years ago summed it up nicely when he said, "First, don't sweat the small stuff. Second, in the end it's all small stuff." He had a few other comments but he and I were both Navy and they probably wouldn't be fit for a public forum.

Can we pick more than the person's brain? What did you have in mind ... or would we be better of not knowing?

Many people esp. children and teens rather find interactive video media and lecturers' seminars a more educational tool, the same way to hear a teacher instruct in a classroom. It can be used to combat discrimination and stereotypes through the use of media of a given people's monologues (i.e. Japanese-American war internees and Iranian anti-Khomeini refugees) and open discussion about historic events such as the Civil Rights Movement, the Holocaust, Fall of the Berlin Wall and 9/11 Survivors (and science classes with former or retired Astronauts and Cosmonauts' space travels) can offer a grea... The power of oral tales and verbal interaction is worth than a thousand words. Each of us has experiences no one else has had. It's part of the uniqueness of life and creates a delightful situation where each of us has something to offer others regardless of age. For example, Megan Fox et al may be "brainless" as was claimed before but that doesn't mean they lack in experiences from working in the entertainment industry that none of us have had. Right now I'm in a project where I could use some of that insight - a case of the young teaching the old new tricks, as it were - but that simply ain'... [More]
