Scientists breed glow-in-the-dark cats

Genetically modified fluorescent cats are helping researchers find new ways to treat Aids.
By inserting specific genes in to the cats the animals were able to resist the feline form of the disease. "We did it to mark cells easily just by looking under the microscope or shining a light on the animal," said Dr Eric Poeschla.
The method worked so well that nearly all offspring from the modified eggs had the restriction factor genes. And these proteins were made throughout the cats' bodies. The researchers found that there was reduced replication of the feline Aids virus - known as feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) - in these cats.

I agree with all of you and was thinking the same possibilities and may I include that they well now have to find a new way other than dripping us in the dark to kill us lol.

Genetically modified fluorescent cats are helping researchers find new ways to treat Aids. I find this and all research done on animals to be horrific. We have no right to harm or torture any living creature for our own benefit. No good can come of evil.

They already do have glowing mice. Click here and scroll down the page and you'll see a picture of the glowing mice. They've also done pigs, monkeys and octopi. Can you imagine waking up and having that glowing cat with black eyes sitting on your chest staring at you? I would probably have to change the sheets, lol.

Cats living in a research lab, being forced to endure needles or however else they do what they do is torture. And, if you really believe that cruelty doesn't exist in "animal research", then how about you go volunteer yourself? Nice little reality you live in. PS: Thanks for the compliment on being a tree hugger

Lol! MJNYC he also said you are an ediot! I agree both ways, sure it's awesome, but it's not really worth anything.. Maybe on pigs, since they are like us... Except in reggie2011's case it's the other way around. Anyways, it's really not harmless, but it's unfair and unnecessary. Waste of money, do it on a pig.

They cured feline aids by making the kitty cats glow *claps hands* now to make fish that walk on land and mamals that play the piano. All jokes aside its awesome that they cured the cat aids but why are the scientists that are supposed to be so smart and do meaningfull things with their time wasting it one making animals glow... its not like there are more opressing matters to attend to like, say, globing warming or world hunger enc. nope no worries, just keep making animals that glow, that will solve our problems.

"If you could show that you confer protection to these animals, it would give us a lot of information about protecting humans," the Mayo Clinic researcher explained. Um, no, not necessarily. Cats are not humans. Have we learned nothing from Thalidomide? You may laugh, but I think this quote from Lord of the Rings sums up my views on vivisection and animal experimentation in general; Gandalf to Saruman: "And he that breaks a thing to find out what it is has left the path of wisdom,"
