Richard Freeman has embarked upon a journey to Sumatra in search of the mysterious ape-like creature.
Sumatra's rainforests have suffered greatly due to deforestation in recent years but it is still home to a vast 13,000 square kilometre expanse of trees - the perfect place to go looking for one of the world's most intriguing cryptozoological mysteries.
The orang pendek, "short man" in Malay, is said to be 4-5 feet tall but powerfully built with broad shoulders and long muscular arms. Sightings suggest it walks upright like a human, its body is covered with black or honey-coloured hair.

So you have already made up your mind then that this phenomenon is objective in nature, and that there must be some living, breathing creature behind these sightings? My point was to have a hoax you have to have some type of physical evidence in order to have something to hoax.. Alright, mass hallucinations, there's the other spin on it... I don't know, that seems like a leap of faith to me. Or maybe I'm just being too skeptical now. Having faith is a human attribute, and one must have the wisdom to look hard before leaping. I'm almost afraid to ask what your thoughts are on Mothman. Mothman?,... [More]

Mothman?, yeah I remember him, I have faith he was killed by a bug-zapper in Jersey last year. RIP. I don't know. No physical evidence means (to you) that it couldn't have been a hoax, and we do have "eyewitness accounts" which continue to this day to go on... Guess that means he could be out there, right...

One is of a creature that has never been documented in any way (no fossil record of anything resembling it, and no known animals that exibit any of the physical characteristics described). The other.....

Your mixing apples and oranges. Mike G: "how so?" Are you quoting things I have never said now? What's the point if you are going to artificially move this conversation forward without me? I wonder how that would work if I employed that tactic to converse with you: Stardrive: Your not gettin the point that there there in the woods. Well, no. I'm not. Do you not realize how inane it is to outwardly voice full faith in the existence of one unknown cryptid that has nothing but witness accounts to vouch for it, while simultaneously stating concretely that another could not exist when it has equal ... Not my theory at all, I am just supporting it, every bit of credit must go to Diechecker. He came up with this entirely on his own to my knowledge, however, in defense of his hypothesis, I think this chap from Sumatra might answer these questions? Well played sir! And this fellow appears to look very comfortable with a bipedal gait And this fellow shows some remarkably curious characteristics. Perhaps giving rise to an idea of an intelligent hominid? What deion was given that makes you think the one you refer to above was definitely not a Gibbon? The characteristics seem so indistinguishable, ... [More]

Hey, I apologize for heading you off at the pass and anticipating your response, but after seeing your reaction, I was right, that would have been your response. It would have been mine as well.

Well, no. I'm not. Do you not realize how inane it is to outwardly voice full faith in the existence of one unknown cryptid that has nothing but witness accounts to vouch for it, while simultaneously stating concretely that another could not exist when it has equal proof. It depends on what you are calling "equal proof". If you are talking about MothMan he was seen or reported over, what, a week? With, what, a half dozen reports? While the Orang Pendek goes back hundreds of years minimum, with likely hundreds of accounts. Does 1000 eyewitness reports hold the same weight as 1, or 2, or 10? I'd... [More]

Hey DieChecker, Based on the little/no evidence we have and the obvious lack of qualified experts involved in researching this particular cryptid, and despite the hard time you got for your idea. I think you came up with a reasonable explanation for what people are reporting as the orang pendek. I also wanted you to know that I understood you were not submitting this idea as a scientific theory nor where you claiming that you were an expert on primates. While we don't always agree on many things, I have learned much from you and enjoy reading your ideas and opinions. I think most of us know yo... [More]

While the Orang Pendek goes back hundreds of years minimum, with likely hundreds of accounts. Does 1000 eyewitness reports hold the same weight as 1, or 2, or 10? I'd argue that the two different creatures being reported do not have the same level of eyewitness evidence. Otherwise, every guy that reports a giant, albino dogman has to be takes as seriously as the quarter million people who saw the Pope roll through town. Apples to orang... [More]
