Failed Mars probe to crash back to Earth

Image Credit: Roscosmos What was originally hoped to be a triumphant return to space exploration by Russia's space agency has now turned in to a liability with the possibility that the 13.2 tonne spacecraft could come crashing down within a couple of months. Engineers have still not completely given up attempts to repair the probe and send it on its way to Mars. "We estimate that the Phobos-Grunt will fly until January, and to make it perform its mission, we still have time until the beginning of December," said Roscosmos general director Vladimir Popovkin.
