The stricken Phobos-Grunt spacecraft is likely to fall back down to Earth as early as next January.
What was originally hoped to be a triumphant return to space exploration by Russia's space agency has now turned in to a liability with the possibility that the 13.2 tonne spacecraft could come crashing down within a couple of months. Engineers have still not completely given up attempts to repair the probe and send it on its way to Mars. "We estimate that the Phobos-Grunt will fly until January, and to make it perform its mission, we still have time until the beginning of December," said Roscosmos general director Vladimir Popovkin.
Russia's failed Mars probe could come crashing down to Earth in January unless scientists can find a way to blast it out of low-Earth orbit, the head of the Roscosmos space agency said Monday.
