Will it ever be possible for a human to talk to and have a meaningul conversation with an animal ?
Every year great strides are made in understanding animal vocalizations, but despite this there is still a long way to go before we can fully understand what animals like dolphins are communicating to one another. John Stuart Reid and Jack Kassewitz of the "Speak Dolphin" organisation for instance have developed a CymaScope device with which they hope to interpret the sounds that dolphins make. There have also been advances in the study of dog barks and chimp vocalizations.
This year, enormous strides have been made in understanding non-human animal vocalizations. But will we ever be able to hold meaningful conversations with another species, such that both sides understand each other ?

but given the way we behave, will they even want to talk back. I often wonder what those dolphins doing tricks are really saying to us....

Same! If I learn cat language, I can finally achieve my dream of being a real live "Khajiit"! Either that or I'll just take an arrow to the knee ;p

"Will it ever be possible for a human to talk to and have a meaningul..." Humans can barely talk to eachother, it seems. How could we manage talking to animals?

I always talk to animals !! However, none of them ever showed signs of understanding what I was saying, nor did they give a damn. I can assure you that's not going to change anytime soon.
