China has declared plans to land a man on the moon and to build a space station by as early as 2020.
The announcement came as part of a five-year plan that details the progress of China's space exploration endeavours including the development of new satellites and a significant technological breakthrough in manned spaceflight by 2016. "When looking up at the starry sky, we are full of longing and yearning for the vast universe," said China space official Zhang Wei. If the country succeeds in its ambitions it will be the first nation to put a man on the moon since the last Apollo mission in 1972.
A white paper published on Thursday laid out the country's five-year plan for the development on new satellites, spacecraft and a space station and provided the official confirmation of China's lunar ambitions.
