Historians are looking to the future with efforts to formally protect the Apollo landing sites.
There are hundreds of individual items on the moon that were left there after the Apollo astronauts returned home; while these may remain undisturbed for now, in the future formal protection will be needed to prevent future generations from disturbing the sites. "I think it's humanity's heritage," said anthropology professor Beth L. O'Leary. "It's just an incredible realm that archaeologists haven't begun to look at until now."
California’s catalog of historic artifacts includes two pairs of boots, an American flag, empty food bags, a pair of tongs and more than a hundred other items left behind at a place called Tranquillity Base.
