Abbie Tully has been struck with an unusual illness that renders her allergic to cold temperatures.
Known as "cold urticaria", the condition means that any exposure to the cold could not only bring her out in a rash but may even lead to a potentially fatal anaphylactic shock. Abbey is no longer able to attend a regular school, has to wrap up at all times and can't go out unless the weather is warm. "Within minutes of being outside the reaction spreads all over her legs, arms and face, even if it's not that cold," said her mum. "She is desperate for the weather to warm up so she can play outside. Sometimes all she wants to do is go for a ride on her bike but she can't."
Even wrapping up warm in the cold weather has little effect as the condition develops even if only a small portion of skin is exposed to the cold. Abbie has even had to quit her normal school and attend a special unit for children with long-term illnesses during the colder half of the year.
