Google scientists create 'computer brain'

The extensive neural network consists of over 16,000 computers and can learn things all on its own.
Created at Google's secret X laboratory, the brain simulation was let loose on the internet to see what it could learn. What does a sophisticated brain-like network of computers do when unleashed on the web ? It goes on Youtube and looks up cat videos of course.

It might sound strange, but being able to recognize a cat is a considerable achievement. Researchers have presented their efforts as a representation of a new generation of computer science, computer systems that can 'learn' and make advances in multiple areas including vision technology, speech recognition and language translation.
Inside Google’s secretive X laboratory, known for inventing self-driving cars and augmented reality glasses, a small group of researchers began working several years ago on a simulation of the human brain.

Lol, I bet that super intelligent computer would have found it by now Haha, it would probably hide it incase to stop people from unplugging it. All these systems are in place but there are still a few critical links provided by humans, refuelling, runway management etc. Maybe the 'brain' (that's better than the robots ) could manage these too eventually but it still leaves the question of why, what desire or need would push the brain to take this action. Personally if I was the self aware computer 'brain' I would bugger of into space an power myself on solar energy. Come back to earth every no... [More]

Remember those armed flying drones in Terminator 2? Well, they're being used in Afghanistan now.

Remember those armed flying drones in Terminator 2? Well, they're being used in Afghanistan now. Yip that is true and ther ewas a news report of one over the US that was programmed to return to the ship automatically if it lost transmission or whatever it's called. It lsot transmission and did not return it started to fly towards a major city. lol They sent out an F16 on standby in case thye needed to shoot it down. They got the transmission back and managed to return it though.

We have had recon' drones for years, these are a step forward from them but I do not see how this is similar to the SkyNet situation as far as a self aware artificial intelligence (sorry if I am getting repetitive). I think we might be going back and forth on this for a long time... Oh I get you. Here's how skynet works: The flying drones in Terminator don't have AI. They are controller by the "Brain" computer, the main one that they go to shut down in Temrinator Salvation. They ar ejsut liek the ones we sue now, it would jsut take a computer "brain" like the one google has invented to take co... [More]

A computer that will have a desire to take over the world is Science Fiction. Work like this pushes back the capabilities of what machines will be able to do in the future and is (in my eyes) therefore necessary. Machines are not self aware (as humans are), they do not have desires (like taking over the world). They maybe be ale to simulate these needs (desires and feelings etc) but they are simulations. A computer may learn but it will not have a true desire for power or self preservation and therefore will not take over (SkyNet or iRobot style). It might be time to worry when human life is e... You are wrong. They don't need to have desire to take over the world. All the need is the reason and a law. iRobot started from there. Their law is to protect the world, make it better. No intelligence and power in this world should be greater than the law. What's human intelligence anyway? A chain of chemical reaction. Humans can have desire, why can't robots? They have RAM, they have electric as the core of their brain. LOL...iRobot as a source??

Oh I get you. Here's how skynet works: The flying drones in Terminator don't have AI. They are controller by the "Brain" computer, the main one that they go to shut down in Temrinator Salvation. So in short, this google "brain" system would need to become self aware through learning then jsut take control of the technology it could access now. Later on it would start making the other stuff. Sorry Coffey if I was a bit vague, I knew how this works (I enjoyed the films). Its the main-frame "brain" becoming aware, making its own decisions and defying its programming that I have a problem with bel... [More]

Breakdown... Elaborate? LOL...iRobot as a source?? Seconded. It is a shame we have to resort to Hollywood examples on this subject, but they are what has given people this fear that a robot/computer/mainframe/AI could take over the world after awakening/becoming self aware or just being a very naughty boy.

An A.I. wouldn't be a bad thing, if it is restrained and have parameters. Matter of fact, it would definitely be a assist towards cyber-protection and military warfare as well as civilian applications. Don't let fear of sci-fi type scenarios scare you from advancements in technology that would benefit mankind on all kinds of levels.
