The 1600-year-old Temple of the Night Sun has been located deep within the Guatemalan jungle.
The giant masks adorning the structure depict the sun god as he traverses the sky over the course of a day, with a shark-like appearance as the sun rises over the Caribbean in the east and the noonday sun depicted as an ancient being with crossed eyes. The temple would have once served as a beacon that would have been visible for miles around.
"We have images of the sun god at different stages ... but we've never found anything that puts it all together," said Maya expert Simon Martin. "We've had to assemble [the sequence] from bits and pieces of information and just trust that we got it right. This could be an opportunity to see the whole thing stage by stage."
Some 1,600 years ago, the Temple of the Night Sun was a blood-red beacon visible for miles and adorned with giant masks of the Maya sun god as a shark, blood drinker, and jaguar.
