Scientists are planning to drill down near Naples to determine if a huge magma chamber exists there.
Volcanologists suspect that Italy could be the site of a massive volcano, similar to the one believed to be located beneath Yellowstone National Park. Experiments will be conducted to determine if there is indeed a threat in the region and whether or not an early warning system can be set up to alert people of a potential eruption.
"These type of areas can, at their maximum eruptive strength, be the origin of the only eruptions which could have catastrophic consequences globally, having the same intensity as the impact of very large meteorites would have," said project head Dr. Giuseppe De Natale.
Reuters reports that across the bay of Naples from Pompeii, where thousands of people were killed in a deadly eruption from Mount Vesuvius in AD 79, there lies a hidden 'super volcano' with the potential to kill millions.
