Could NASA be working on technology that could one day enable us to travel to other solar systems ?
Dr. Harold White, the head of NASA's Advanced Propulsion division believes that Star Trek style warp drive is not only a possibility but that it is actually under active development. Using conventional technology a trip to another solar system, even with the ability to travel at nearly the speed of light, would take years. To solve this dilemma Dr White and his team are exploring ways to bypass this problem but without breaking the laws of physics in the process.
The answer may lie in exploiting loopholes in known mathematical equations which suggest that the warping of the fabric of space-time might actually be possible. "We want to go, really fast, while observing the 11th commandment," said Dr White. "Thou shall not exceed the speed of light."[!gad]Dr. Harold White, the head of NASA's Advanced Propulsion division believes that Star Trek style warp drive is not only a possibility but that it is actually under active development. Even with experimental technology, like ion thrusters or a spaceship's aft pooping freaking nuclear explosions, it would require staggering amounts of fuel and mass to get to any nearby star. And worse: it will require decades—centuries, even—to get there.
