50 skulls discovered in Aztec temple

Image Credit: CC 3.0 Wolfgang Sauber The temple is located in New Mexico and is considered to be the most sacred of all Aztec temples dating back 500 years. It is believed that a wide variety of important ceremonies took place at the temple from 1325 until the Spanish conquest in 1521. The new discovery of 50 skulls at a single sacrificial stone indicates a ceremony of an unprecedented scale with five of the skulls found buried beneath the stone and the other 45 piled on top.

Archaeologists including Raul Barrera of Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History have been examining the site in great detail to try and piece together the specifics and significance of this unusual find.
