Volvo developing 'crash-proof' cars

Car manufacturer Volvo is aiming to build cars that can drive by themselves and avoid collisions.
Self-driving cars have been on the table for a few years now with companies investing large sums in an attempt to develop the technology to the point where it can be used in consumer vehicles. Despite huge technical and legal hurdles, Volvo believes that by 2020 its cars will be so advanced that nobody using them will ever be injured or killed again.
The key lies in two mechanisms - driver assistance technology and autonomous driving. Various sensors would allow the car to detect hazards and take appropriate action on behalf of the driver such as putting on the breaks in the event that something is on the road ahead.
