Three rescue dogs in New Zealand have received training to teach them basic driving skills.
The bizarre endeavor is part of a publicity stunt for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals which is hoping to increase awareness for how intelligent dogs can be. The three canines named Monty, Porter and Ginny were sat inside a mock vehicle in an upright position and taught how to operate the steering wheel, break pedal and gears before being moved on to an actual car.
"We chain behaviours together... in this case we've got 10 behaviours we're putting together," said trainer Mark Vette. "So we'll start the car, get into position, brake on, gear in place, back onto the steering wheel, accelerator, take off and drive fast along the straight and then stop."
Things didn't always go to plan however, especially once the dogs had started driving a real car. "A couple of days ago the car was going too fast, the trainer nearly got run over," said Vette.[!gad]The bizarre endeavor is part of a publicity stunt for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals which is hoping to increase awareness for how intelligent dogs can be. They sit in a driving position on their haunches responding to instructions called out from the dog behaviour experts. Animal trainer Mark Vette and his team began training the animals using a mock vehicle before introducing them to a real car - a Mini especially adapted for paws.
Interesting as I just recently argue it is not possible to teach a dog to drive a stick shift through a major city. I hope people realize there is a difference between training a chicken to pull a level and dogs driving to the mall. The dogs training is equal to training a chicken to pull a level, not teaching a teenager to drive through downtown traffic from school to the mall.
Whoops, I tsomething real strange happened. A post I was working on in another thread posted in this thread. I found the thread where it belongs and removed if from here. Please, excuse me.
Update. Live on monday cambell live reporter will be driven by a dog (US sunday night). All those claiming its a hoax can tune in or wait for it on youtube
Sounds like the people training the dogs to drive are overcompensating for something. Dogs are certainly bright, and have great instincts, but we shouldn't be teaching them to drive vehicles.

Well according to the article they are just trying to show how smart shelter dogs are so they'll get adopted. Why they chose driving? Who knows. I guess because it takes a lot of training to teach them to perform several complicated tasks at once. Could have just put them in bumper cars, but it wouldn't have been as funny.
