Space travel can accelerate Alzheimer's

New research has discovered that long journeys in space can increase the risk of Alzheimer's disease.
The study was funded by NASA and aimed to investigate the possible health risks associated with long-haul space travel. The results suggested that astronauts would be subjected to harmful cosmic radiation that could have a lasting, negative impact on the brain. Future manned missions to Mars and beyond will need to find a way to combat this problem to ensure the safety of the astronauts.

"Galactic cosmic radiation poses a significant threat to future astronauts," said Prof Michael O'Banion. "This study shows for the first time that exposure to radiation levels equivalent to a mission to Mars could produce cognitive problems and speed up changes in the brain that are associated with Alzheimer's disease."
Long journeys into deep space, including a mission to Mars, could expose astronauts to levels of cosmic radiation harmful to the brain and accelerate Alzheimer's disease, said US research Monday.

Humans belong to Earth . Yeah right, and we aren't supposed to fly, travel at 70 mph or cross the oceans either. Fortunately for mankind the courageous have always won out over the naysayers, otherwise we would still be living in caves and hunting with sharpened sticks.

But everything you mentioned happens on Earth . Advancement is essential but you must point in the right direction . Peace on Earth will never be attained by poking Sirius with a sharp stick .

But everything you mentioned happens on Earth . Advancement is essential but you must point in the right direction . Peace on Earth will never be attained by poking Sirius with a sharp stick . What a lot of nonsense. Your argument is a non sequitur. Peace on Earth can only be achieved by a change in human attitudes. Whether we explore space or not is irrelevant. The one is not linked to the other so your argument is devoid of logic. Motor vehicles haven't bought peace on Earth, aircraft haven't brought peace on Earth and ships haven't brought peace on Earth but to say we shouldn't have invente... [More]

As the article says, the Earth's magnetic field protects us from a good deal of space radiation. The Earth's magnetic field is very large, but also very weak. I wonder if we could substitute a small, strong field, which is easy to produce, around a space ship and get the same, or better, shielding effects as the large weak one.

As I have said before, space travel poses it's risks!Muscular dystrophy is noted in long term space flights.Apart from the newly found medically ruled, Alzheimers .Many astronauts say that the experience leaves them floored. They need time to recover. They have to readjust to the Earth's normal gravity. We are protected in a safe cocoon. This Earth has served as a protected place for mankind for all these years since Genesis. Even Earth's magnetic field has served as a protective field against radiation etc.We all have to accept mankind's needs to know it's boundaries. We are all only human,& ... [More]
