New research has discovered that long journeys in space can increase the risk of Alzheimer's disease.
The study was funded by NASA and aimed to investigate the possible health risks associated with long-haul space travel. The results suggested that astronauts would be subjected to harmful cosmic radiation that could have a lasting, negative impact on the brain. Future manned missions to Mars and beyond will need to find a way to combat this problem to ensure the safety of the astronauts."Galactic cosmic radiation poses a significant threat to future astronauts," said Prof Michael O'Banion. Long journeys into deep space, including a mission to Mars, could expose astronauts to levels of cosmic radiation harmful to the brain and accelerate Alzheimer's disease, said US research Monday.
