Scientists make 'bug-eye' camera

A sophisticated camera built to function the same as an insect's compound eye has been developed.
With 180 lenses, the insect-inspired prototype device is capable of providing an impressive depth of field and a wide-angle view. Created by a team from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the camera could one day be used in endoscopic equipment or surveillance systems."The compound design of the fly's eye incorporates perhaps 28,000 small eyes, or ommatidia," said Dr Jianliang Xiao. "That's the direction we want to move in."
A digital camera that functions like an insect's compound eye is reported in the journal Nature this week.
