Can Hindus eat test-tube beef ?

In Hinduism the consumption of beef is considered taboo, but what about meat that's grown in a lab ?
In a world first, a beef burger created in a laboratory was cooked and eaten in an event that has made world headlines. Many have been contemplating whether this signals the beginning of a new era in which food shortages will become a thing of the past and in which people can enjoy all the meat they like without having to slaughter any animals.

But what about religions that consider the cow sacred and prohibit the consumption of beef ? Is meat grown in a lab technically still meat and does this restriction still apply ? Religious discussion sites are currently abuzz with the concept that prohibited meat products may soon become kosher - could the advent of the test-tube burger really represent a turning point in meat consumption taboos ?[!gad]In a world first, a beef burger created in a laboratory was cooked and eaten in an event that has made world headlines. When the world’s first test-tube beef burger was cooked and eaten this week, food critics all asked about its taste. For many Jews, Muslims and Hindus, the first question was whether their faith allowed them to try it.

And I thought Islamic radicals were the only "strange" common people on earth. Huh. I am now cooking a delicious T-bone steak in peaceful differerance to such a bizzare belief(the 330 million gods) Though, I do much prefer a good salad. Wonder how many "gods" my salad has...

I have a question because I don't know: Do fundamentalist Hindu's forbid the drinking of cow milk? Absolutely not! I understand the Hindu veneration of the cow is based on the cow being the perfect providing being, turning grass into milk and dung, both of which are used by humans. They certainly accept the dung and the milk.

And I thought Islamic radicals were the only "strange" common people on earth. Nope. But they are the only ones who have explicit designs on YOU. Other religions, like Hinduism, rest in themselves, which makes them much less virulent. They stop where your nose is, so to say. Islam is a deal-breaker because it does not.

You have no idea how many Hindus eat beef. Just because a religion has a particular tradition doesn't mean everyone follows it. For example, Christians are asked to be chaste until the day they wed but how many of you follow that? Another thing, the cow is not prayed to as such, we don't bring in cows and put them on a pedestal and start worshipping them. Cow was held in high regard due to the fact that it gave milk that could further be processed into other dairy products. Beef was made taboo due to that reason, if it wasn't and every one started slaughtering cows (cuz you know beef is delici... [More]

Soylent Green, anyone? Making burgers from a test tube is quite an achievement, in my view. Would I try it? Yes, if only to see if it tasted like "real" beef.

In Hinduism the consumption of beef is considered taboo, but what about meat that's grown in a lab ? I would think not. I consider this to be the same as someone who has taken a vow of silence but instead just write notes. It is basically cheating.
