Swarms of ladybirds invade Romanian town

Local residents have been forced to seal up their homes to keep out tens of thousands of the red insects.
The small town of Lipova in western Romania has been subject to a peculiar invasion that is proving to be something of a nuisance.

Countless thousands of ladybirds have descended upon the town, forcing locals to seal their windows and doors in a futile attempt to stop the insects from getting in to their homes.

So great are their numbers in fact that in some areas residents have taken to sweeping them up with a broom.
"No matter what you do they keep coming," said Arina Deca who lives in the town. "I had my window open for a few minutes and when I closed it they were like a living carpet."

Experts believe that the ladybirds have been attracted to the town due to a sudden increase in the number of greenfly aphids, their primary food source.

"We've had very warm weather, about 20 to 22 degrees which must have something to do with it," said Mayor Mircea Jichici. "We've tried pesticides but we don't have enough to make an impact."

I don't feel too sorry for them. In Indiana, as much of the Midwest, we are infested with the Asian lady beetle. Been that way for the past 8 years. They are everywhere. Ugly little orange things that stink, bite and stain. No natural predators.

Let's not take any chances, I say we burn the whole town. Who's with me!? Burn the town. Burn the town. BURN THE TOWN! I only join an angry mob of fire-hungry villagers when there's a Frankenstein's Monster, Wolfman, Dracula, or Mummy.

One time when I was out fishing I came back to find my truck filled with lady bugs. I drove to a friend's organic farm and set them free. My friend was very happy to give them a home.

the whole time I was reading this every time I saw the word ladybird I was thinking of the dog on king of the hill cuz its called ladybird so in my head I kept on picturing a bunch of blood hound dog clones of ladybird running around the city and taking over everything and eating all the meat and invading peoples houses while Hank Hill stands in the background freaking out trying to stop them all I've always called them ladybugs my whole life I didn't know until today they were also referred to as ladybirds

At least they were not infested with brown recluse spiders.

We have lots of these. One year the bathroom ceiling had about 300 of them. I figured it was meeting and my input was not needed. By the following day they were gone. What ever they want is fine by me.

The few times I have experienced "ladies" in such enormous gatherings has been in association with food opportunities or at shopping mall sale events.
