An Australian woman was injured when her dog accidentally knocked the handbrake and ran her over.
The woman, who has chosen to remain anonymous, had been returning from a walk with her three dogs and had put them in to her car in preparation for the journey home.

Things took an unfortunate turn however when one of the dogs managed to knock the handbrake by accident and the vehicle rolled backwards, trapping her arm in the door and dragging her to the ground where her upper torso was crushed under the wheels.
The woman suffered significant injuries to her back, neck and shoulders which required extensive medical treatment. She was eventually offered $143,590 in compensation from Australia's Transport Accident Commission (TAC) in addition to medical expenses and income entitlements.

"Obviously, there was no liable party in this accident, and while it has its humorous dimension, the major injuries caused were no laughing matter," said her lawyer Ann Cunningham.

Dogs should not be loose in the car IMO. They should be gated in the back area or in a crate. Try telling my heeler that. He loves to ride in the front seat of my truck.

I've heard of monkeys driving a car...seriously... but never heard before of a dog doing what's described in the article.

I'm not sure. It happens quite a bit in the South. Rednecks get run over by their own trucks, all the time. yea, but it usually involves another redneck driving their trucks. however dogs have shot some of their owners with their guns,

Dogs should not be loose in the car IMO. They should be gated in the back area or in a crate. I never heard of this in my life. Perhaps the car shouldn't be on or in neutral with no one in the driver seat and a dog in the car and of course they shouldn't be jumping around acting crazy while a person is driving but most dogs should be able ride safe without a crate. At least thats how I've always seen it. It is very rare to see a dog crated in a car unless they are particularly small.

I'm not so sure. I don't think they should compensate her. There was no liable party. Technically, it's kind of her own fault. She loaded the dogs in the car. I feel bad for the tax payers. Their taxes probably paid for this. In australia and nz we pay a levy on our income which allows free med care and insurance
