Bizarre 'Shug Monkey' cryptid said to lurk in rural Cambridgeshire

A terrifying monster said to be a cross between a dog and a giant ape has been spoken about in stories for years.
One of the world's lesser known cryptozoological enigmas, this bizarre English legend concerns a hybrid beast like no other - a horrifying creature said to stand 8ft tall that has been described as a cross between a dog and a large bipedal ape.

It is said to have the face of a monkey, jet-black hair, blazing red eyes and long claw-like nails, while witnesses claim to have seen it both running on all-fours and walking upright like a human.

According to local folklore, it represents an omen of death for anyone who lays eyes upon it.

"Shug Monkey is quite often tied into lonely lanes, thresholds, and for travelers, operating as a warning figure or omen bringing tales of misfortune," Dr David Waldron told Mail Online.
That said, he also argues that there is no conclusive evidence to support its existence.

"England is also a difficult environment for a large animal like that to exist undetected," he said.

"The name is what turns fear on a lane into a story others can share (and, sometimes, relive) and it connects people to heritage, the landscape and tradition."

Despite local myths surrounding the creature persisting to the present day, actual sightings of the creature are mainly historical, with few to no encounters with the Shuk Monkey being reported since World War II.

Even so, anyone who happens to be wandering the remote, rural roads of Cambridgeshire after dark will no doubt be making a few nervous sideways glances toward the hedgerows, just in case.

I have tried to find a mention about the shug monkey earlier than 1900, but I failed.

The Shug monkey is more likely a local urban legend or folktale, or perhaps an undiscovered new species.舒格猴更有可能是当地的都市传说或民间故事,或者可能是一种尚未被发现的新物种。 剧透 剧透     The Shug monkey is more likely a local urban legend or folktale, or perhaps an undiscovered new species.

Is that the m********ing monkey ghost that supposedly haunts some ancient pile, or something else?

It is about ten kilometers from Shuckburgh Castle in Dullingham. That is all I could find locally that is closely associated to 'shug'.

If I'm not mistaken, the famous Rendlesham Forest incident happened somewhere nearby. Maybe this Shug Monkey is an escaped alien pet?

It was considerably earlier than Rendlesham. First recorded case was a ghostly creature that attacked a horse carriage driver. Oddly, quite a few monkey related stories in UK history, such as the ghost monkey that pleasures itself  and the monkey hanged as a spy as people mistook him for a foreigner!

Hence why people in my neck of the woods call people from Hartlepool, monkey hangers . Nice to see how the locals have embraced the nickname ,gotta respect them for that .
