Paul Rosolie ended up calling off the stunt early after the huge snake crushed one of his arms.
The two-hour "Eaten Alive" documentary, which was aired on the Discovery Channel, has been attacked by viewers and critics alike after the actual attempt to have Rosolie swallowed by an anaconda was unexpectedly cut short due to an arm injury.
Most of the show was taken up by the crew attempting to locate the snake, which measured 25ft, in the depths of the Amazon.
It wasn't until the last 20 minutes that the attempt was made.
Rosolie donned his special suit, which was designed to protect him during the stunt, and managed to crawl up to the animal on his hands and knees. The snake coiled around him and at one point even grabbed his head in its jaws as it attempted to swallow him.
This is about as far as things went however as shortly afterwards Rosolie called in his support team to extricate himself from the snake. It turned out that he had removed some of his protective armor for greater maneuverability which had made his arm vulnerable to being crushed.
Following the broadcast some viewers took to social media to express their disappointment that the attempt had been cut short and that the documentary hadn't lived up to its name.
Rosolie however maintains that he had succeeded in doing what he set out to do.
"I'm sick of watching forests burn," he said. "It's being destroyed so fast and bringing attention and bringing more people and action is really difficult, so I wanted to do something that would…cause enough of a stir to say 'what's going on here ?'"
