Residents of the city were left puzzled and disgusted by the strange, foul-smelling vapors.
It sounds like a scene from Stephen King's "The Mist", yet the spectacle of a strange, putrid fog rolling across the landscape appears to have been very real indeed for those living in the coastal US city of Seattle this week.
Residents took to social media in their droves to report what was happening and to post photographs as the stinking vapors swept across the streets and seeped in to buildings.
Numerous theories were put forward in an effort to explain the phenomenon with some conspiracy theorists even pinning the blame on government geo-engineering experiments.
Meteorologist Scott Sistek believes that the smell may have originated from materials that were washed in to local waterways during recent flooding and that a certain combination of weather conditions may have forced the unpleasant odor lower to the ground.
Fortunately however the putrid fog has now all but lifted and residents can breathe easy once again.
