The SpaceX CEO is planning to set up a new, faster global Internet and use the profits to colonize Mars.
Having worked on everything from spacecraft and solar panels to high-speed rail systems and electric cars, Musk is no stranger to innovative and ambitious technological endeavors.

His latest project, which aims to provide high-speed Internet access to everywhere in the world including places that are unable to receive conventional fibre broadband, will involve launching an army of 4,000 satellites that will orbit 750 miles above the earth.
Even more ambitious however is his plan to use the proceeds from this satellite network to help fund the future construction of a base on Mars via his private space company SpaceX.

"We see it as a long-term revenue source for SpaceX to be able to fund a city on Mars," he said.

The space Internet is likely to take at least five years to set up with an estimated cost of over $10 billion and will work by bouncing signals from satellite to satellite.

He always strikes me as the guy who wants to be famous and just can't make it onto society's radar.

Awesome, if he goes through with it and it actually works. I'm a little skeptical, however, as it seems like every year he announces something that he doesn't follow through on. I would love to be wrong, though.

I would love to be wrong, though. Frankly, he impresses me. Granted, some things have things happen, but I believe the guy takes the mistakes and such and learns from them. The Tesla impresses me, (ok, we own one) To have an only electric car go from 1 to your stomach being left five miles away in five to eight seconds in such a car impresses me. (Well, as well as makes me air, car, anything sick, as well ) I myself co... [More]

I would love to be wrong, though. Satellite internet already exists. It's quite expensive with the cost being based on bandwidth usage per month. Now whether it has to be expensive is another issue, but I can't see Elon's plan being a big success unless he's competitive with fiber optic or current 4G LTE technology.

From what I read this morning, Google is getting in on this project and bringing a billion dollars to the table.
