A sophisticated remote operated crime-busting robot could soon be found patrolling the streets.
Researchers at Florida International University have come up with a novel new way to enable disabled police officers and military personnel to continue serving as patrol officers.

The robot, which has been nicknamed TeleBot, is a life size humanoid machine that can be controlled remotely through a sophisticated telepresence system which even enables the operator to see everything that the robot sees.
"This kind of project requires a lot of hard work, technical expertise and resources," said Discovery Lab director Jong-Hoon Kim. "We had to build everything from scratch."

Weighing in at 75 pounds and measuring 6ft in height the TeleBot is certainly no pushover.

"What impresses me most about the TeleBot prototype is that most of the work was performed by undergraduate students operating under very tight budget and time constraints," said Jeremy Robins, a US Navy Reserves lieutenant commander who helped to fund the project.

A toddler could kick that over. No we need to get SERIOUS when it comes to crime. ED209. Instead of knocking politely like Robocop does BLOW THE DOOR DOWN WITH A FLIPPING MISSILE! Don't make crime pay. Don't make criminals pay for their crimes either! No HURT THEM! MAKE CRIME PAINFUL! The more it hurts the less they'll want to do commit it. If they get their kneecaps blown off by an armour piecing round so be it. They won't be able to run off when they next misbehave themselves will they!

Wow, that was a bit over the top. ^ A crime fighting robot would be favorable for dangerous situations where human cops may be hurt. But, I think there should be a high level of human control and decision making involved with what it will do.

Well Robocop didn't knock very politely when he know for sure that the bad guys were in the building. I'm all for taking out crime in the same way it's caused. However, before ED209 goes and rips you a new one, you need to be certain you have the correct building and ED209 won't be taking out innocent people as collateral damage. Like that isn't a problem with actual human cops.

Like that isn't a problem with actual human cops. Never said it wasn't, except an ED209 is a bit more extreme.

I can't help but wonder if the robot will develop a bad attitude after 15yrs with no promotion or sign of promotion.
