It is looking as though pensioner Joao Coelho de Souza could be the oldest human being that ever lived.
News of the 131-year-old's extreme age went viral after social security workers shared it on Facebook recently following a visit to his home. One of them, Kennedy Afonso, has asked the government to conduct an investigation to help prove that Joao's age is in fact correct.
"I present Joao Coelho Da Silva, who came to Acre when he was only 11-years-old," he said. "I appeal to the state government and the local government in Sena Madureira to determine whether this is true so they can claim a place in the Guinness Book of Records for the oldest man on earth."
Joao, who is still quite lucid and can recall many things about his long life, has three children and a wife who is only 62 years old - an age difference of 69 years.
If his claim to fame turns out to be true then he will have significantly exceeded the age of the previous record holder, Frenchwoman Jeanne Calment, who lived to be 122.
The current record holder for world's oldest living person is Japan's Yasutaro Koide who is 112.
