The discovery marks the second time a strange object has washed up on a beach in New Zealand this month.
The 100-meter-long pipe was discovered on a beach in Te Waewae Bay, Southland where it was photographed by Environment Southland before being posted up on Facebook.

"Any ideas on what this might be ?" they wrote. "Or who might be missing it? This 100 metre long object washed up on Te Waewae Bay in western Southland this week. The object is long, black, made of some kind of plastic, has metal loops in each end and is pretty heavy."
Some online users have suggested that it could be an oil boom for containing spills out at sea.

The discovery follows on from the finding of another anomalous object the week before on New Zealand's Muriwai Beach by Melissa Doubleday who posted images of it on Twitter.
