The peculiar incident had more to do with the driver's alcohol intake than the presence of a paranormal entity.
According to reports, the strange turn of events occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning in the Dunedin suburb of Waverley, New Zealand.

The driver - a 24-year-old man - had gotten himself into a spot of bother after observing what he believed to be a ghost that had tried to flag him down for a ride from the side of the road.

Panicked by the presence of this supernatural hitchhiker, he stopped his car, reversed up the road and then inadvertently backed the vehicle into a ditch where he promptly became stuck.
It wasn't long before the police had arrived on the scene.

According to Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, the ghost that had left the man so spooked was in fact little more than a pedestrian who had been trying to flag down a passing car for a lift.

A breath test also revealed that the panicked driver had been under the influence of copious quantities of alcohol.
