The cephalopod can be seen chilling on the shark's head as it swims along in this peculiar clip from New Zealand.
What does an octopus do when it has to travel a long distance but is too tired to make the trip ?

It hitches a ride on a shark's head... apparently.

This was the bizarre scene recently captured on camera by researchers with the University of Auckland in New Zealand who spotted the animals in the Hauraki Gulf.

"A shark giving an octopus a ride is one of the strangest things that University of Auckland marine scientist Professor Rochelle Constantine has seen," the university wrote.
"This 'sharktopus' in the Hauraki Gulf was a mysterious find... octopus are mostly on the seabed while short-fin mako sharks don't favor the deep. The encounter is a reminder of the wonders of the ocean."

Researchers pointed out that the shark is capable of traveling at speeds of up to 40mph, meaning that the octopus might have needed to hold on for dear life.

Exactly how these two animals came to interact in this way remains a complete mystery.
