What would you say to finding this guy in your house ? Image Credit: Bernard Spragg
An inquisitive seal recently broke into a house in New Zealand and kicked back there for several hours.
For most people, the problem of unwanted animals entering the home is usually limited to spiders and insects, but for one New Zealand family this week, the unexpected intruder turned out to be a young fur seal that had made its way into their house from the ocean 150 meters away.
The curious seaborne mammal seemingly managed to navigate through two cat-flaps to enter the building before spending a couple of hours in the hallway, in the spare room and on the couch.
It is believed that the seal also had a run-in with the family's cat.
"The cat would have gone to defend its territory and obviously the seal wasn't as intimidated as some dogs are, so Coco must have bolted around the side of the house, into the catflap, and the seal must have followed her," said Phil Ross - a marine biologist who happened to be out at the time.
His wife and kids had all been asleep when the unexpected visitor wandered in and they didn't discover that it was there until the following morning.
After successfully ushering the animal out into the garden, they phoned up the Department of Conservation which sent a ranger around to the house to pick it up.
Fortunately, the seal was no worse for wear and was taken back to the ocean a short time later.
The cat, meanwhile, seemed pretty traumatized by the experience.
