Consumers outside of Japan will finally get a chance to purchase the super-cute robotic canine companion.
Designed to look, move and behave like an actual puppy, Aibo has long been associated with the concept of a future dominated by robots, not just at work but also in the home.

The latest model, which will be available to purchase in the US from September, uses a cloud-based artificial intelligence to recognize faces, perform tricks and to develop its own unique personality.
"Aibo's charming personality, dog-like behaviors and ability to intelligently interact with family members help to create a personal bond," said Mike Fasulo of Sony Electronics North America.

With a retail price of $2,899 it certainly isn't cheap - especially for what is essentially a toy.

On the plus side though, at least you won't need to clean up after it.

Damn, that's expensive. Looking at it, I would have said $300 tops. And it isn't even soft and furry. Just get a real pet. From a shelter.

It is not even cute. Proper dog breaders are not going to like this is it hits off.

Yeah, that's funny how relatively simple it was to create something that credibly imitates all the spectre of emotions to look quite alive and feeling without a real intelligence inside. I think that means our emotions, no matter how high we value them, are quite mechanical in nature, some simplistic stimulus-reaction hormonally-controlled thing. That does not make them less vital for our survival as species though, but they cause a huge lot of troubles for the intelligence. Most of the time emotions rule and we need to make reasons for the intelligence to justify our mindless emotion-controll... [More]
