Rendlesham UFO mystery endures 40 years on

What did Lt Col Charles Halt and his men witness ? Image Credit: CC BY-SA 4.0 Taras Young It's the UK's best known UFO case and even now, 40 years later, the Rendlesham Forest UFO incident continues to remain a topic of heated debate among UFO researchers.

The strangeness began on December 26th, 1980 when US servicemen stationed at RAF Woodbridge witnessed an unknown object descending into the woods.

Upon investigating, they encountered a glowing metallic object which seemed to move through the trees as they approached. When they returned the next day, they found three triangular impressions in the ground at the same spot.

On December 28th the object appeared a second time, prompting deputy base commander Lt Col Charles Halt and a group of servicemen to venture out into the woods to investigate.What they saw that night would go on to haunt them for the rest of their lives.

"Our security team observed a light that looked like a large eye, red in color, moving through the trees," said Halt. "After a few minutes this object began dripping something that looked like molten metal. A short while later it broke into several smaller, white-colored objects which flew away in all directions."

Over the years there has been a great deal of debate over what the object could have been, with theories ranging from an extraterrestrial spacecraft to a nearby lighthouse.

Col Halt however has always remained adamant that what he had witnessed was no lighthouse.

To this day, no definitive explanation for the incident has ever been found.
