Cold case investigators believe that they have finally discovered the identity of the infamous murderer.
The notorious killer, whose identity has remained a mystery for over 40 years, terrorized parts of northern California back in the 1960s and 1970s and has been linked to multiple murder cases.
His nickname 'Zodiac killer' was earned after he started sending cryptic messages to newspapers and even to the police themselves, some of which having only recently been deciphered.
The case iself has remained unsolved for decades, but now a team of 40 former police investigators, journalists and military intelligence officers - known collectively as 'The Case Breakers' - has come forward to claim that the identity of the mysterious killer may have finally been found.
According to the team, the Zodiac killer was Air Force veteran Gary Francis Poste who died in 2018.
Their conclusion is based on a number of things, including similarities between Poste's photograph and a 1969 police sketch, as well as the solutions to some of the killer's encrypted messages.
Not everyone is convinced by the team's findings, however, with federal police investigators maintaining that the evidence is not conclusive and that the case continues to remain unsolved.
"The Zodiac killer case remains open," the FBI told the San Francisco Chronicle
"We have no new information to share at the moment."
