We could hear from aliens by 2029, new study claims

Could our own signals have already reached an alien planet ? Image Credit: NASA / JPL-Caltech
A response to signals sent by some of our own spacecraft could reach Earth before the decade is out, scientists say.
The question of whether we are alone in the universe remains one of the biggest philosophical conundrums of our time. While it seems almost inconceivable that our civilization is alone in the cosmos, the fact still remains that we have yet to see any evidence to the contrary.

That could soon be set to change, however, according to a new study which looked into the possibility that an intelligent extraterrestrial civilization could have sent a response to some of the signals that we have previously sent into deep space.

To learn more, scientists at the University of California analyzed signals sent from Earth to the Voyager 1, Voyager 2, Pioneer 10, Pioneer 11 and New Horizons probes to find out how far these might have reached into space and whether they might have been intercepted by any alien worlds.
Their findings revealed that the signals sent to Voyager 2, Pioneer 10, and Pioneer 11 have already reached at least one distant star system.

If someone on a planet orbiting these stars happened to intercept the signals and send a response, the soonest we would receive a reply would be 2029.

Over time, the signals we have sent will reach more and more star systems, increasing the possibility that someone, somewhere will pick up the signal and attempt to reply.

Given how unlikely it is that any of these will just happen to be home to a technologically advanced civilization, however, it seems that expecting any sort of response at all is perhaps a little optimistic.

First message will take YEARS to decipher and when we finally do it will read "Please stop trying to contact us. We just want to be left alone."

I would guess that's the year their funding runs out.
