Declassified NSA documents reveal that Russia was known to be in possession of secretive microwave weaponry.
The true nature of Havana syndrome, which is named after a spate of suspected 'attacks' which began in Havana, Cuba back in 2016, has remained something of a mystery for the better part of a decade.
Victims of the phenomenon typically report symptoms such as fatigue, headaches and nausea as well as debilitating long-term health issues that have proven difficult to treat.
Official investigations have yielded somewhat mixed results, with some implying that the symptoms could be psychosomatic and others favoring an attack by foreign directed energy weapons.
The latter of these two possibilities has seen something of a boost this week thanks to the highlighting of a declassified 2014 document by the National Security Agency which seems to suggest that Russia was known to be in possession of a weapon thought to produce identical symptoms.
The file mentions two NSA counterintelligence officials who experienced debilitating brain-related injuries as well as dizziness and cognitive issues after exposure to a suspected microwave weapon.
One of the two men - Chuck Gubete - has since died and the other - Mike Beck - now suffers from Parkinson's disease that he blames on the alleged attack in Russia.
The NSA document notes that "a high-powered microwave weapon that may have the ability to weaken, intimidate or kill an enemy over time and without leaving evidence" was known to be in the possession of a "hostile country" to which Beck had traveled during the 1990s.
"The intelligence information indicated that this weapon is designed to bathe a target's living quarters in microwaves, causing numerous physical effects, including a damaged nervous system," the document states.
Despite this, however, the NSA found no concrete evidence that such a weapon had been used.
This echoes the difficulties in linking the use of such a weapon to the more recent cases of Havana Syndrome targeting US officials in Cuba and elsewhere.
So could Russian microwave weapons be the key to solving the mystery ?
The search for answers continues.
